The Taming of the Shrew

Petruchio and Kate - photo Lindsey Burnett The Taming Of The Shrew is William Shakespeare’s comic romp about two unmarried daughters of a wealthy Italian merchant. Older sister Kate matches her gentle and loveable sister Bianca in beauty, but in temperament leaves much to be desired with her razor tongue and strong will. Though Bianca has many suitors, her father will not allow her to marry until Kate has a husband of her own. No one dares to marry the foul-tempered Kate until Petruchio arrives and tries his hand at courtship. Then the real fireworks begin. The battle of the sexes? There really is no contest, is there?

Director's Message

The Taming of the Shrew has been the subject of much criticism. In particular, feminists have attacked the play, and in particular the play's final scene, as being offensively misogynistic. Others have defended the play by arguing that the play is not meant to be taken at face value, and point out the fact that Petruchio submits himself to the same treatment to which he submits Kate — if she gets no sleep or food, neither does he. I prefer to let you, the audience, decide. Who really gets tamed here? I hope you enjoy the discussion!

Once again this year, Emerald Pig is pleased to partner with the Friends in Need Food Bank . Audience members are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item donation for the food bank, which greatly benefited from the generosity of theatre-goers at last year’s event.
